MERCATO METROPOLITANO
Elephant & Castle
Elephant & Castle, London
Food market
Status : Completed
Mercato Metropolitano Elephant & Castle marked the beginning of a new food-led urban typology in London: the transformation of disused industrial fabric into a civic marketplace rooted in sustainability, community and cultural exchange. Occupying a former paper factory, the project revealed the spatial generosity and raw material character of the existing structure, allowing food, craft and social life to unfold within a distinctly urban interior landscape.

The architectural approach embraced the site’s industrial legacy while introducing a layered spatial choreography of stalls, communal tables, production spaces and event areas. Rather than imposing a singular formal gesture, the design cultivated an evolving framework - one that could accommodate independent traders, on-site production and public gathering in equal measure. The result was a porous, adaptable environment where architecture receded to foreground activity, exchange and atmosphere.

Material interventions were deliberately restrained and robust: exposed structure, reclaimed elements and lightweight insertions created a dialogue between permanence and improvisation. Circulation routes followed the logic of the existing shell, encouraging exploration and visual connections across the market floor, brewery and courtyard spaces. Day and evening occupations were equally considered, with lighting and spatial density calibrated to support both everyday use and festival-like intensity.

As the first Mercato Metropolitano in London, Elephant & Castle established the spatial and social DNA later developed across subsequent sites. More than a food hall, it functioned as an urban commons - a place of production, learning and shared experience embedded within the everyday life of the neighbourhood.
