Rudall Crescent is a considered refurbishment and extension of a West London terraced house, reimagined to support contemporary family life while respecting the measured proportions of its original fabric. The project focuses on clarity, light and continuity, transforming the existing structure into a calm and cohesive domestic environment.
Set within a quiet residential crescent typical of West London’s Victorian and Edwardian urban fabric, the house sits within a rhythm of repeated façades and carefully scaled gardens. The intervention responds to this context with restraint, maintaining the street’s architectural coherence while enhancing the relationship between interior and rear garden - a defining feature of the neighbourhood’s domestic character.
The conceptual approach centres on continuity rather than contrast. The design works with the inherent order of the terrace typology - aligned rooms, defined thresholds and vertical hierarchy - refining rather than replacing it. Subtle extensions and spatial openings increase daylight and depth, creating visual connections that draw the landscape into the heart of the home. The result is an architecture of quiet transformation, where new elements are integrated seamlessly within the existing framework.
The ground floor is reorganised to establish a fluid sequence of living, dining and kitchen spaces oriented toward the garden. Openings are carefully positioned to extend sightlines and maximise natural light, while maintaining moments of enclosure and intimacy. Upper levels are rationalised to improve circulation and privacy, reinforcing the legibility of the townhouse section. The spatial strategy balances openness with hierarchy, ensuring both collective and private spaces feel distinct yet connected.
A restrained material palette reinforces the sense of cohesion. Natural timber joinery, stone surfaces and soft plaster finishes create warmth and tactile richness, while contemporary detailing introduces precision and refinement. Glazed openings frame views of planted outdoor spaces, allowing light and greenery to animate the interior. The overall atmosphere is one of understated elegance - rooted in context, yet confidently contemporary.
